Eight of the 15 Assembly units that make up the Srinagar Parliamentary seat reported single-digit voter-turnout in the polls held on Thursday.

Reports said about 50 polling stations in Srinagar did not see a single voter turning up. It is reported that most of these booths were located in Habba Kadal, Eidgah and Khanyar Assembly constituencies.

Eidgah reported the lowest voter-turnout, at 3.43 per cent, while the Habba Kadal Assembly constituency reported 4.26 per cent turnout. Close on its heels, in the Amira Kadal Assembly constituency, only 4.86 per cent voters turned up.

The highest estimated voter turnout was in Chrar-i-Sharief Assembly constituency at 32.10 per cent, followed by Khan Sahib (24.33 per cent) and Beerwah (23.59 per cent).

Srinagar reported an overall turnout of 14.05 per cent during polls on Thursday. Former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir and the sitting Member of Parliament Farooq Abdullah is contesting from the constituency. In 2017, Abdullah had won the seat when the voter-turnout was a mere 7.13 per cent. Others in the fray are — PDP’s Aga Syed Mohsin, Khalid Jahangir from the BJP and People’s Conference’s Irfan Ansari.

The Udhampur Parliamentary constituency, which also went to polls on Thursday, reported 70.19 per cent voter turnout, helping push the estimated voter turnout for the two Parliamentary constituencies in the State to 45.64 per cent.

Both constituencies went to polls with heavy deployment of police and Paramilitary forces.
