Fire-fighters at work at Bagree market, one of the largest wholesale markets in Eastern India. The massive fire broke out in market at 2:30 AM in the wee hours of Sunday.
Over 40 hours have passed, but the fire is yet to be cooled down.
Located in the heart of Eastern India's largest trading hub, Burrabazaar, the market dealt in toys, apparels, cosmetics, medicines and other daily use items.
Fire department officials say that the blaze has been contained, but it is yet to be fully doused. With a variety of inflammable items still located inside the market premises, officials say dousing the flames could take more time.
According to shop-keepers, the market stocks goods worth Rs 20-25 crore at any given point of time and the average business there stands at around Rs 4-5 crore daily. Losses, they say will run into a few crores. As per last reports, there have been no casualty in the incident.
