The government plans to start an airboat service to the Taj Mahal, in Agra, from Delhi on the Yamuna river. The pilot service is likely to start on January 26, 2019, the Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, said here on Saturday.
Speaking at the 91st annual general meeting of the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Gadkari, said the airboat, based on Russian technology, will have an engine of a vehicle and carry 16 people at a time.
Cable cars, rope cars
Also, talks are on to introduce cable cars and rope cars as other modes of public transport. The public sector company WAPCOS Limited attached to the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation has partnered with Austrian ropeway and cable car giant Doppelmayr Garaventa Group.
“We are in discussion with Jammu & Kashmir for the same,” Gadkari said. “Public transport on electricity is the future,” he added.
The government, Gadkari said, is taking steps to convert to all diesel and petrol vehicles to methanol, LNG and electric vehicles. While we already have capacity for methanol, he said the government is finalising all standards and norms.
“These are the new innovations that you need to invest. They are economically viable and help fuel growth. Only when there is growth we can eradicate poverty,” Gadkari said.
