After a long wait, Gujarat will get its first All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), which will come up in Rajkot with an investment of ₹1,200 crore.
Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel announced on Thursday that the Centre had decided to set up an AIIMS hospital with a bed capacity of 800-1,000 in Rajkot. The State government will allocate about 1,200 acres of land free of cost.

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani tweeted: “Happy to share that Gujarat gets its first AIIMS. Thank you Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji for being benevolent to the people of Gujarat as always. With AIIMS, Rajkot adds one more facet to its identity.”
Notably, Rajkot is the Assembly constituency of the Chief Minister and has been a BJP heartland. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was elected to Gujarat Assembly from the same city. An AIIMS in Rajkot will cater to the medical requirements of entire Saurashtra and Kutch region besides people from other parts of Gujarat and neighbouring States.
Along with Rajkot, Vadodara was also considered for the project. Nitin Patel said, “A committee was formed at the Central level to decide on the location for the AIIMS. This committee evaluated the geography and other factors and Rajkot was selected.”
The new AIIMS will be equipped with the latest medical technology, laboratory and research centers besides expert medical team. It will also provide specialty and superspecialty treatments.
