The Cochin International Airport Ltd has registered a substantial increase in passenger volume in the first half of the current fiscal.
Passenger movement from April to September grew by 15.63 per cent with the domestic sector clocking a growth rate of 19.55 per cent. The international sector, however, grew only 13.19 per cent.
The airport totally handled 31.07 lakh passengers, including 18.76 lakh international and 12.32 lakh domestic passengers.
CIAL in a statement issued here cited improvement in passenger and aircraft movement and relatively low service charge for airliners coupled with increased flow of domestic tourists as the reasons for the passenger traffic growth.
With the growth in traffic numbers, the airport company is targeting 6 million passengers during the current financial year against the 5.34 million in the previous fiscal.
With the domestic sector emerging as the top performer this time, the company expect the overall passenger movement to grow further during the fiscal. The numbers will improve with more international carriers set to open services to Kochi with the opening of a swanky new international terminal here, VJ Kurien, Managing Director, CIAL, said in the statement.
The total aircraft movement during the period grew by 15. 93 per cent to touch 24,990 against 22,418 in the same period last year
