The Mangalore-based National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) will conduct its five-day technology festival – ‘Engineer 2012’ — from October 24 (Wednesday).

Addressing presspersons here on Monday, Gopal Mugeraya, Dean (students’ welfare), said that events in ‘Engineer 2012’ range from branch-specific to interdisciplinary. This helps in testing the practical engineering skills and the foundations of pure science and logic.

Aman Gupta, Joint Convenor of ‘Engineer 2012’, said that its electronics event – ‘Automata’ — will see robots of all shapes and sizes built for myriad purposes.

Several well-known experts in various fields would deliver lectures through videoconferencing under the ‘Tech Speak’ event. Some of the speakers include Harold Kroto, professor of chemistry at Florida State University, where he is doing research on nanoscience and cluster chemistry; Chris Bangle, an American automobile designer; and Marcus Peter Francis du Sautoy, professor of mathematics at University of Oxford, he said.

There will be an ethical hacking and information security workshop where participants will get an opportunity to interact with industry experts.

Gupta said an event called ‘Socially Conscious Engineering’ will aim to convey the importance of a green world. From renewable energy to development plans, the fest will stress on this area where students and engineers can make a lasting impact, he said.

There will be business events like the ‘Case Study Challenge’ in which the participants get to solve real life problems. The ‘NITK B-plan’ contest invites young entrepreneurs to submit their ideas for a successful start-up, he said.

B.M. Hegde, member of the board of governors of NITK, will be the chief guest for the inaugural event. Swapan Bhattacharya, director of NITK, will preside over the programme, he added.
