Five samples of dead birds from Telangana were found positive for H5N1 Avian influenza virus till the evening of April 13. The other samples are under process, the Agriculture Ministry has said.

In an update on the situation, the Ministry said on Thursday that the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases, Bhopal, received 10 dead birds from Srinivas Reddy Poultry Farm, village Thorrur, block Hayathnagar in Rangareddy district of Telangana on April 12.

On April 13, the Telangana government was requested to send a report on the unusual mortality in birds at the farm and take necessary measures as per the ‘Action Plan on Avian Influenza.’

In accordance with the ‘Action Plan’, intimation of the result was given to the State for immediately starting the control and containment operations at the epicentre to prevent further spread of the disease.

“The intimation was also given to the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare by this Department,” the Ministry said.

Telangana has informed the Centre that there are 18 villages and about 1, 45,315 birds in one km radius of the epicentre, of which 41,040 had died till April 14, and the government has already culled 51,888 birds till April 15.
