As the Nilgiris, a prime tourist destination in the South, is preparing for its second peak season beginning this weekend, star hotels are ready to welcome guests with cage-protected home-grown organic vegetables and fruits in their menu.

“September-October is the second season in the Nilgiris when, apart from world-wide travellers, business heads and top bureaucrats visit for planters’ and traders’ conferences. They can enjoy healthy and tasty cuisines prepared with fresh organic Nilgiri vegetables harvested in our gardens right before their eyes,” R Muralidharan, Operations Manager, Gateway Hotel Coonoor, a unit of the Taj group, told Business Line . “Our biggest challenge is protecting the vegetables from the monkeys. We have developed caged system of cultivation with wire mesh cages allowing unhindered sunlight, ventilation and aeration. Our guests can enjoy monkeys’ mischief while visiting our organic farmlands,” he said.

“As we use home-grown vegetables in our staff canteen also, there is substantial cost-saving,” Human Resources Manager D. Antony Gerald said.

“For this second-season, in our Regional Food section, there will be home-style specialities with Nilgiri vegetables, prepared by housewives from Badaga families, the predominant community of the Nilgiris,” said P. Vibhakar, General Manager, Taj Savoy.
