The Purushottampatnam lift irrigation scheme on the Godavari will provide irrigation water to the uplands in East Godavari district and it will cater to the growing water requirements – industrial as well as domestic – of Visakhapatnam city, according to Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.

He was speaking at Pithapuram in East Godavari district on Thursday after laying the foundation stone for the lift irrigation scheme, expected to cost more than ₹1,600 crore. The scheme will be linked to the Polavaram left canal which carries water to the water-stressed uplands in East Godavari — parts of Pithampuram mandal, Peddapuram, Jaggampeta and Tuni – and Visakhapatnam city.

Referring to the opposition YSR Congress leaders and others critical of the project, the Chief Minister said that it only betrayed their ignorance. “The critics of the project are saying that the Polavaram project will not be completed and that these lift irrigation schemes – Pattiseema and Purushottampatnam – are being taken up because of that reason. I assert again that the Polavaram project will be completed by 2019,” he said. He explained that the money spent on the pumps used for lifting water from the Godavari – ₹800-900 crore –would not go waste. “These pumps would be shifted to other areas once the Polavaram project is completed,” he said. He said he was stretching every nerve to complete the Polavaram project by 2019.
