On the third anniversary of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said issues such as cleanliness and hygiene cannot be achieved through the efforts of leaders and governments alone and can only be achieved through the efforts of the society.
“We cannot achieve the target even if 1,000 Mahatma Gandhis, one lakh Narendra Modis, chief ministers and all governments come together. We can achieve it (only) when all 125 crore countrymen come together,” Modi told the gathering, adding that “ Jan bhagidari (partnership of people) has to be appreciated.”
“If you have to abuse Modi, there are a thousand (other) issues...but we should neither make fun nor politicise issues which are meant to bring about changes in society,” he said, referring to criticism that he has “spoilt” children’s October 2 national holiday.
The Prime Minister further said the country has come a long way but a lot remains to be done before the ‘Clean India’ target is achieved. He also said there is need for introspection if the programme has not gained the desired momentum.
“If Swaraj was achieved by the Satyagrahis, Shreshtha Bharat will be achieved by the Swachhagrahis,” he added.
Ranking citiesModi also said the cleanliness rankings of cities has engendered a positive, competitive atmosphere. “Swachhata needs a revolution of ideas as well, and competition gives a platform of ideas to the concept of Swachhata,” he added.
