In a first, Kerala has signed up a recycling company to collect and process e-waste from across the State to get rid itself of a major urban pollutant.
It has entered into an MoU with Earth Sense Recycle Pvt Ltd of Palakkad from within the State and which runs a scientific recycling facility in Hyderabad.
Carrier vehicle
The company will start collecting e-waste from government office, public and private establishments in the State from Tuesday (November 4), Urban Affairs Minister Manjalamkuzhy Ali said.
The e-waste will be collected at ₹5 per kg. A vehicle will roll up to offices and educational institutions for the purpose.
The project was originated by Clean Kerala Company, a company formed by the State Government to develop integrated waste disposal mechanisms for local bodies.
Kabeer B Haroon, Chief Executive Officer, said that the project would benefit local bodies as the company would be paying for the waste collected.
Govt advice
Haroon had signed the MoU with John Robert, his counterpart at Earth Sense Recycle Ltd.
Meanwhile, the State Government has already advised government, private and public sector institutions to hand over e-waste to Clean Kerala Company.
The e-waste collected will then be handed over to Earth Sense Recycle Pvt Ltd.
Discarded computers, laptops, TVs, photocopiers, scanners, radios, tape recorders, washing machines, refrigerators, grinders, mixers and iron boxes, among others, could be handed over in this manner.
According to sources, a similar initiative is being envisaged to get rid the State of plastic waste as well.
