A section of road near the Chennai Central Station caved this afternoon, trapping a car. However, no casualties were reported.
A portion of the busy Poonamallee High Road where tunnelling work is on for the Chennai Metro Rail project gave way trapping a car. The car had to be lifted using a crane, said sources.
“We have immediately taken action to repair the damaged portion,” said an official of the Chennai Metro Rail.
There have been such instances of such cave-in in other locations previously along the Poonamallee High Road and Anna Salai, where tunnelling work is on. In January, a footpath and front of a two-storey residential building sunk in the Chennai Metro Rail’s tunnel between Shenoy Nagar and Koyambedu.
In the first phase, the Chennai Metro Rail is being built at a cost of ₹14,600 crore covering 45 km of which, 24 km will be underground and the remaining 21 km elevated.
