Giving a clear indication about what the Union Budget 2018-19, to be presented by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on February 1, could focus on, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said: “The Budget will provide a new energy to the fast growing economy of the country. It will fulfil the hopes and aspirations of the common man.”

Speaking to reporters ahead of the Budget Session of Parliament, Modi said, “Our objective should be to reach out to the Dalits, oppressed, underprivileged and to those who did not have any access to these benefits. We also need to see how the villagers, poor farmers and labourers are benefited from the Budget.”

Standing comittees

Highlighting the importance of Parliamentary standing committees, Modi said that they should read the fineprint of the Budget and point out issues that can further the nation.

“A month after the Budget session, various committees deliberate upon the details of the proposals. Experience shows that in those deliberations the national interest is above political interests. Cutting across party line even MPs from the ruling party highlight its short comings while the members of the Opposition highlight its salient features. In a way, it provides for a healthy environment and atmosphere for debate and discussion,” he said.

The world is watching

Modi said that the Budget Session is important and global institutions are monitoring India’s growth. He said, “It comes at a time when the world is looking at us, be it the global credit-rating agencies, the World Bank, the IMF which have been very positive in their opinion about the growth of India and the road ahead.” Hitting out at the Opposition for stalling the triple talaq Bill, Modi said, “In the last session it was our effort and the nation had high hopes that there won’t be any politics on crucial issues like Triple talaq so that Muslim women get their rights. However, despite the orders of the Supreme Court, the Bill on triple talaq could not be passed by Parliament.”

Modi’s request

“I hope and appeal to the political parties across the country to join hands in passing the triple talaq Bill to protect the rights of Muslim women,” he added.
