Our Bureau Responding to the Supreme Court’s decision to postpone till January the question of fixing a Bench to hear the title suit in the Ramjanmabhoomi-Babri Masjid case, the RSS and the VHP, ideological affiliates of the BJP, sought the enactment of a law in the Winter Session of Parliament to build a temple at the disputed site.

The Congress described these reiterations as a ‘predictable course’ for the BJP to polarise voters in the run-up to the elections. “This is a familiar story. Every five years, before the elections, the BJP tries to polarise views on Ram Mandir. The matter is before the Supreme Court and everyone should wait until the it decides on the issue. I don’t think we should jump the gun. The Supreme Court will decide when to hear the case,” said former Union Minister P Chidambaram.

BJP’s silence

Although the BJP officially did not comment on the SC’s decision, the Ram temple issue seemed to have been dusted out for the months leading up to the 2019 general elections. Several BJP MPs followed RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s lead, underlining that the “patience of Hindus is exhausted”.

Union Minister Giriraj Singh said: “The patience of Hindus is coming to an end, I do not know what will happen if they lose patience”. Vinay Katiyar, a founding member of the Bajrang Dal, a militant affiliate of the RSS, said: “There is a limit to patience. We have waited for so long. The delay is at the behest of the Congress.”

The Allahabad High Court had conceded that the disputed site is the birthplace of Lord Ram, said the RSS in a statement. Hence, there should be no delay in the construction of a temple at Ramjanmabhoomi either through a court directive or a law, it added. “The Sangh believes there should be a grand temple at the birthplace at the earliest and land should be provided for building the temple. The Supreme Court should expedite the matter and, if there is any difficulty, the government should enact a law to facilitate the construction,” said the RSS statement.

Alok Kumar, international working president of the VHP, said: “The Supreme Court has once again adjourned the hearing of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi appeals...The adjournment has fortified our stand that the solution to the issue cannot wait eternally.”

An organisation of Hindu saints and seers from 125 sampradayas have announced a meeting at the Talkatora Stadium here on November 3-4 to discuss Ram mandir-related programmes. The VHP has begun to petition all MPs and MLAs and the Governors of various States for legislation on the matter.
