Over 42,000 private buses are likely to stay off roads in West Bengal for an indefinite period from October 9, following a strike call by the operators.
Demanding an immediate fare hike, these operators gave a deadline of October 8 to the State Government failing which they threatened to go on an indefinite strike.
Tapan Banerjee, joint secretary of Joint Council of Bus Syndicate, said,: “Without a fare hike in sync with the rise in diesel prices, plying vehicles will become unviable. We have informed the State Transport minister, Madan Mitra, about the same.”
According to him, 70 per cent of the 35,000 buses have stopped plying across the 19 districts of the State. In Kolkata nearly 3,500 buses are off roads already. Operators have been bearing an additional cost of Rs 2,000 in districts and Rs 1,500 in Kolkata following an increase in diesel price.
