The Tamil Nadu government has announced free public transport facilities in the city for four days from tomorrow to help the flood affected.

According to an official release, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation will operate its buses free for four days from December 5 to 8.

Routine is slowly being restored in the flood-affected areas in Chennai, Kanchipuram and Thiruvallur. People will need to start travelling to various place. The government has decided to help by providing free transport, the release said.

Infra restoration

The authorities are fighting hard to get Chennai’s infrastructure, including transport, airport and power back to normal after the unprecedented rains and floods of the last couple of weeks

The Airports Authority of India hopes to reopen Chennai airport on Saturday, two days after it was shut down due to flooding on Wednesday night.

``The runway in Chennai is ready for use. There should be good visibility and there should be no further deterioration of weather conditions for operations to be carried out. We are working to get the water in the terminal building out which we hope to do by tonight so that operations can begin,” RK Srivastava, Chairman, Airports Authority of India told Business Line .

Airport reopening

AAI officials also indicated that in the next few days the airport will be back to full commercial operations. Over 35 aircraft had been stranded there for the last two days.

Power could also be restored in stages with the Power Grid Corporation of India restoring three transmission lines in coordination with Tamil Nadu.

Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal tweeted that more than 75 people are assisting in Chennai and have set up a control room.

The Department of Financial Services has also urged banks to restore services in flood affected areas in the city, replenish cash in ATMs. Banks will work on Sunday and offer extended business hours, an official statement said.

The Karnataka government has activated a State Emergency Control Room with toll free number 1070. It has received 150 calls from 400 people from the State stranded in Chennai.
