An active western disturbance and its offspring circulation will start affecting North-West India from Friday, triggering rain and snowfall in the hills to rain/thundershowers along the plains. The offspring circulation is expected to shape up over South-West Rajasthan, and will move across Punjab and Haryana by Tuesday next.
Incremental moisture
It will pilot most of the weather, thanks to incremental moisture mopped up from the North Arabian Sea. This moisture would be carried over the hills and plains and dumped as snow or rain/thundershowers. Strong wind convergence at the higher levels of the Western Himalayas will be matched only by wind confluence at the lower levels in the plains during this period, India Met Department (IMD) said in its outlook.
As a result, light rain/snowfall would occur at a few places over Jammu & Kashmir on Friday evening. Its distribution and intensity will increase thereafter. Fairly widespread to widespread rain/snowfall is forecast over Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh from Saturday to Thursday next. It will be light to moderate to scattered/fairly widespread over Uttarakhand from Sunday to Thursday.
Peak activity
Isolated heavy to very heavy rain/snowfall may break out over Jammu & Kashmir from Sunday; over Himachal Pradesh from Monday; and isolated heavy rain/snowfall over Uttarakhand on Wednesday and Thursday. The peak activity is likely to unfold from Sunday to Wednesday. Under the influence of the offspring circulation, isolated rainfall will commence over Punjab from Sunday.
Distribution and intensity of rainfall over rest of the plains will increase from Monday. Fairly widespread to widespread rains may lash Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi from Monday to Thursday and decrease thereafter. It would appear that the Republic Day Parade on Saturday might have to contend to with the possibility of passing showers.
