United India’s village adoption programme, which is part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) activity initiated in 2012, is gaining momentum. From adopting five villages at start, the company is looking to adopt 52 villages this year.

Adoption of Kudanur village near Anaikatti, its third in Coimbatore region and sixth in the State seemed special with Milind Kharat, Chairman and Managing Director of United India Insurance, taking part in the event.

Community hall The company has invested ₹5 lakh towards construction of a multi-purpose community hall at Kudanur. This was done in association with Rotary Club of Coimbatore Central.

“There are half a dozen graduate and diploma holders in this hamlet. Since this small tribal hamlet is located in the elephant corridor, the man-animal conflict in this village has literally petrified the 120-odd families. The tribal villagers had expressed the need for a multi-purpose community hall, which could serve as a library, knowledge centre and a function hall as well,” the United India CMD said.

United India has provided personal accident insurance cover to every inhabitant of the hamlet.

Rotary Club of Coimbatore Central has avowed to make Kudanur inhabitants, particularly those below 25 years of age, computer literate very soon.

Insurance awareness The company plans to spread insurance awareness in 56 identified schools this year.

Claiming to be an undisputed leader in rural and social sector insurance business, the United India CMD said the company issued 82 lakh policies and procured ₹1,505 crore premium from the rural sector and ₹853 crore under social sector covering 5.7 crore lives.

Under Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (where personal accident cover of ₹2 lakh is available to bank account holders at premium of ₹12 a year, the company insured 2 crore people. “We received 325 claims of which 280 have been settled,” Kharat said
