Senior CPI (M) leader and former Commerce and Industry Minister of West Bengal, Nirupam Sen passed away at a city hospital on Monday morning.
He had been suffering from a prolonged illness and had been on life support since the early weeks of December. Sen was 72. He passed away following a cardiac arrest, according to the hospital.
He is survived by his wife, son and daughter.
Often considered to be one of the key architects behind industrialisation in West Bengal, Sen was instrumental in projecting the state as a destination for private investments, particularly during the last 10 years of the Left Front government led by former Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.
Expressing her condolences in a twitter message, West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, said, "Saddened at the passing away of Nirupam Sen, former minister of West Bengal. Condolences to his family and well wishers."
