Veteran Telugu film writer and director, K. Ramakrishna, who directed more than 100 films in different Indian languages during the past three decades, died in a private hospital in Hyderabad on Friday afternoon owing to respiratory failure.

Popularly known as Dasari's disciple, Kodi Ramakrishna was born at Palakollu in West Godavari district and was introduced to the Telugu field by the late Dasari Narayana Rao in the late Seventies. He worked as Dasari's assistant and learnt the film craft and he directed his first film - Intlo Ramayya, Veedilo Krishnaiah - in the early Eighties. The film, starring super star Chiranjeevi, ran for almost two years in some centres and broke all the previous records.

He directed all major stars in Telugu - Chiranjeevi, Balakrishna, Venkatesh, Suman - and introduced several new actors, actresses, and technicians. He exploited animation graphics, and other technologies, to the hilt and excelled in creating what in common man's parlance are known as "the special effects on the screen". He was regarded as the pioneer in experimenting with technical effects. He directed films in Telugu, Kannada, Tamil and Hindi in different genres - social movies, family dramas, fantasy movies and pure comedies. His death was widely mourned by Telugu film field and in the two Telugu states.
