Solar power for meeting the needs of lighting homes and street lighting in villages is being taken up in a big way by the National Institute of Rural Development (NIRD), Hyderabad.
The Institute has adopted 100 villages in the country to project them as models of development and solar power is being introduced there, according to its Director General M V Rao.
The Rural Technology Park (RTP) at NIRD is advocating the use of Solar Power in every house and diffuses the pressure on the electric grid by an investment of Rs 27,000 on the project. The beneficiary contribution is just Rs 2,700 while the subsidy is 40 percent on the project cost and the remaining amount is to be repaid to the bank in a span of 5 years.
The Institute has developed a Solar Kit with a small panel, 2 solar bulbs and a battery will supply solar power for 4-5 hours and will illuminate 2 bulbs, a fan and television. This could be an answer to domestic power cuts and can be a solution to enjoy uninterrupted power supply, he told newspersons today.
For those wanting higher capacity power can increase their investment and double their power capacity basing on their financial situation, according to RTP project director Siva Ram. The Institute has a `Solar Lighting Assembling and Training Unit' which is engaged in training personnel from youth and women around the country and promoting the use of solar power for domestic, agriculture and street lighting.
