Increase in the handling of many cargoes, including containers, has helped New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) to register a growth of 5.28 per cent in 2017-18.
The port handled 42.05 million tonnes of traffic during 2017-18 as against 39.94 million tonnes in 2016-17.
The port authorities attributed the growth in traffic to the increase in the handling of cargoes such as POL (petroleum, oil and lubricants) products, LPG, cement, edible oil, iron ore fines and pellets for KIOCL Ltd, and containers during the fiscal.
The port handled 1.15 lakh TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of containers with cargoes of 1.74 million tonnes in 2017-18 as against 94,929 TEUs with cargoes of 1.41 million tonnes in 2016-17. Of this, the share of coffee cargo was at 12,249 TEUs (12,200 TEUs).
Container Corporation of India (Concor), which has commenced operation from ICD in Bengaluru to NMPT, has established the railway siding at NMPT. The Traffic Manager of the port said this initiative would further boost the connectivity and transportation of container traffic through rail.
New Mangalore Port handled 2.20 million tonnes of LPG cargo during 2017-18 as against 2.02 million tonnes in 2016-17.
A press release said here that the port handled 10.17 million tonnes of coastal cargo during the just concluded fiscal as against 8.33 million tonnes handled in 2016-17, recording a growth of 22.08 per cent.
The net surplus of NMPT crossed ₹100 crore for the 13th consecutive year, it added.
