Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has said the greatest challenge before media in a free society is to retain its credibility.
Speaking at an event on Friday to commemorate National Press Day, he said, “If the Emergency was ever to be re-imposed, it would collapse for the simple reason that one of the strengths of Emergency was press censorship and technology does not permit press censorship today.”
He also said in today’s scenario, where there is highly competitive electronic, print and digital media and availability of multiple forums, censorship is impossible due to technology.
“One of the greatest challenge for the media in a free society is… how does it retain its credibility and continue to be a maker of public opinion,” he added.
At the event organised by the Press Council of India, the Finance Minister presented the National Awards for Excellence in Journalism. Eminent journalist and Chairman of The Hindu Group of Publications N Ram received the prestigious Raja Ram Mohan Roy Award.
