The ongoing United Nations Conference on Biological Diversity in the city has adopted key decisions related to bio-safety, which will enable moving the discussions to the next level pertaining to the umbrella treaty of the UN Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD).

The conference adopted some 18 key decisions related to the Cartagena Protocol on Bio-safety, including the supplementary protocol on liability and redress of damage to biodiversity by living modified organisms (LMOs), trans-boundary movement of LMOs, monitoring and reporting, budgetary provisions and socio and economic considerations.

“We are happy with the progress. The mood (at the conferrence) was very good. There were some difficult issues, but overall the progress is good. From Monday, we will take up a whole new agenda on the Convention of Biological Diversity,” Braolio Ferreira de Souza Dias, Executive Secretary of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, said.
