Infants

Risks in driving baby home

Nearly all parents unknowingly put their newborn infants at risk as soon as they drive away from the hospital, according to research presented at the American Academy of Pediatrics. The study of 267 families showed that 93 per cent made at least one critical error in positioning their infant in a car safety seat or when installing the safety seat in the vehicle. “We need to provide the resources and services they need to help ensure the safest possible travel for newborns and all children,” said Benjamin Hoffman, lead author of the study.

Disease control

Ebola not airborne

The UN Mission for Ebola Emergency Response has clarified that Ebola is not an airborne disease. We do not anticipate that the Ebola virus is mutating to become airborne, the agency said. However, there are risks and concerns: every day more people are infected and dying because they cannot get the care they need, it added. The Ebola virus only spreads through contact with bodily fluids. As advised by the WHO, the safest thing is to avoid direct contact with bodily fluids of the people who have Ebola, and with surfaces and materials contaminated with fluids.

Weight control

Weight regain unaffected by slow loss Contrary to current dietary recommendations, slow and steady weight loss does not reduce the amount or rate of weight regain compared with losing weight quickly, says new research published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology journal. The study set out to examine whether losing weight at a slow initial rate, as recommended by current guidelines worldwide, results in larger long-term weight reduction and less weight regain than losing weight at a faster initial rate in obese individuals.

Regenerative medicine

Single window for advice

A new ‘one stop shop’ that will provide regulatory advice for those working in the life sciences industry on regenerative medicines has been launched in the UK. The resource sits within the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency’s Innovation Office. The service will provide a single point of access to regulatory advice from the four regulatory bodies that work in the sector. It will help businesses and other organisations to navigate the different regulators.
