Nuclear disaster

Chernobyl, 30 years on

This week, the world marked 30 years since the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident in Ukraine. On 26 April 1986, an explosion and fires caused the largest uncontrolled radioactive release in the history of the civil nuclear industry. Most of the radioactive material got deposited near the installation, but substantial quantities were carried by wind over Belarus, the Russian Federation and Ukraine, as also some parts of Europe. According to WHO, the accident led to a change in nations’ attitudes to nuclear safety. Radiation safety standards, strategies for improving nuclear safety, approaches to emergency response procedures, and mitigation of consequences were revised after the accident.

EU collaborates with GPs

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) organised a workshop to explore new ways to engage general practitioners and family doctors. “General practitioners and family physicians play a key role in patient care; they often have the first contact with the patient and accompany them throughout the life of their condition,” explained EMA’s Guido Rasi. The interaction would help EMA get a better understanding of how medicines are used in real life and the potential impact of regulatory actions on patient care. It would also raise awareness amongst general practitioners on how they can inform regulatory discussions on the benefits and risk of medicines so that decisions take into account the reality of clinical practice, the EMA said.

Cancer doctors not for ‘surgery’

Leading oncologists from the United Kingdom and the European Union have expressed their support for Britain remaining in Europe. Writing in the May issue of The Lancet Oncology , they said the UK contributes substantially to EU cancer research funding, strengthening the research area as a whole, and benefits through research grants and by being involved in important multinational collaborations. The UK also benefits from the free movement of people, with 15 per cent of academic staff at British institutions being non-UK EU nationals, a note from the journal said.
