Risks of buying pets’ meds online

If you’re purchasing medications for your pet online to save money or for convenience, there are sites that represent legitimate pharmacies. But the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says there are others that sell unapproved pet drugs and counterfeit pet products, make fraudulent claims, dispense prescription drugs without requiring a prescription, and sell expired drugs. If you are ordering pet medications online, look closely to ensure that you’re ordering from a reputable pharmacy, says Martine Hartogensis, deputy director of the Office of Surveillance and Compliance in FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine.

Better labelling in the EU

The European Medicines Agency and the European Commission have updated the annex to the European Commission guideline on excipients in the labelling and package leaflet of medicinal products for human use. Excipients refer to everything in a medicine other than the active substance. While most excipients are considered inactive, some can have a known action or effect in certain circumstances. These must be declared in the labelling of the medicine for its safe use. The updated annex contains all excipients that must be declared in a medicine’s labelling and package leaflet and their agreed safety warnings.
