Diabetes concerns every family. This World Diabetes Day (November 14), the International Diabetes Federation will focus on raising awareness on the impact that diabetes has on the family, besides promoting the role of the family in diabetes management, care, prevention and education.
A day to mark diabetes was created in 1991 by IDF and the World Health Organization in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat posed by diabetes.
Over 425 million people are currently living with diabetes. Most of these cases are type 2 diabetes, which is preventable through regular physical activity, a healthy and balanced diet, and the promotion of healthy living environments. Early diagnosis is important as one in two people currently living with type 2 diabetes is undiagnosed. Pointing out the importance of access to affordable treatment, the IDF says that diabetes can be expensive for the individual and family. In many countries, the cost of insulin injection and daily monitoring alone can consume half of a family’s average disposable income, and regular and affordable access to essential diabetes medicines is out of reach for too many.
