Privacy activists may disagree, but it is a fact that most parents want to keep an eye on the whereabouts of their children. Giving your child a cellphone is a good option, but chances are it could be misused or misplaced and isn’t even allowed in most schools. What if you could attach a tiny device to your child’s bag that could give you real-time information on its location, movement and can even help the child send an alert if she is in danger? GPS-enabled personal tracking devices do exactly that.

Security-surveillance devices are no longer restricted to commercial or enterprise use. Gradually and quite confidently they are available to the general customer. Among the products targeting surveillance, tracking devices are gaining traction for their myriad advantages, from personal to professional, and more. Mumbai-based Letstrack, a leading provider of tracking solutions, have recently have brought out a clutch of tracking solutions, and we have tested two of them -- Letstrack Personal and Letstrack Prime, both targeting the mass market.

Letstrack Personal

It is a small, rectangular hardware that you can attach almost anywhere, on a bicycle, to a school bag, or even in a shopping basket. We tagged it to a small school bag. A customer care professional from Letstrack will also help you set it up. This step was done quite faster than expected. The executive was readily available, thanks to Letstrack’s network of associates. Customers can charge the device with any Type-A USB cable and once charged, they should link it to the official app of Letstrack. Before your profile gets activated, Letstrack would require some KYC documents from you to verify the profile. This part is serious: you can’t fake identity and once Letrack has activated your device, you will be legally entitled to using it.

Post-activation, and when the device is connected to the smartphone, you can start tracking its movement from wherever you are. If you want to keep a track of, say, your school-going children’s movements -- quite a normal demand especially in the not-so-secure urban centers -- this could be an ideal solution. The GPS functions extremely smooth and tracking is easy and convenient.

You get updates and alerts and you can even use the device to send an SOS message in case of an emergency. Another plus is you can view the history of the device’s movement; there is a neat map-view available. The discreet GPS tracker could be useful for senior citizens, too. To us, the most useful features are the speed and zone alerts. You can set your own speed limits and the device will alert whenever it hit the threshold. Worried whether your son might ride his bike faster than normal? Well, here is your solution. The zone alert helps you create tracking “zones” and the device would send you alerts every time it (or the person holding it) leaves the area.

Letstract Personal can be quite useful for parents and small logistics players in tracking the movement of their children or employees. The solution is cost-effective and quite convenient to use.

Letstrack Prima

The Prima needs a technical expert to install it inside your vehicle. But it’s an easy job and won’t take away much of your time. Nor would the installation process tamper with the many wires and connections inside your dashboard. The device monitors every movement of your car. It can be tracked real-time using your Letstrack app. In fact, the app is loaded with features. It helps you track your car’s speed, stops, fuel consumption, fuel spends, and more. It alerts you when the engine and AC is turned off. What’s more, you can even turn off the engine via the app. But you’re advised to use it with a lot of caution.

We tested the device in Chennai and the connectivity was seamless. Letstrack says the device works even in the “most remote areas with unstable network, as it supports a GSM frequency band of 850/900/ to 1800/1900 MHZ. In cases of emergency, you can press an SOS button and send an alarm. The user get an alert even if the car is towed away. The device stores offline data if GPS is not available and would post the same to the server when it goes online. This is quite helpful if you travel to areas where you may encounter poor GPRS.

Letstract Prima is a great value-for-money device and given the benefits, it could be a great, essential accessory to your vehicle.
