Sadhana, Hindi film heartthrob of yore, died one week ago. She inspired the famous Sadhana cut, a hairstyle where a fringe covers the forehead – a brand all its own. Reportedly, the actor was self-conscious about what she thought was a too-broad forehead.

The bouffant too was popular with heroines of the 1960s who piled their hair and let some hang on the sides. Then there are the men’s hairstyles. Amitabh Bachchan’s angry young man look – hair parted in the middle, and sideburns – was as popular as his goatee which came much later in Kaun Banega Crorepati . Long hair and tousled hairdos became the rage too, because younger actors such as Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan sported those. Aamir Khan’s look in Dil Chahta Hai saw many men gelling and spiking their hair and sporting a soulpatch beneath the lower lip, as they did with his shaven look later in Ghajini .

‘Anarkali suits’ are having a great run at the moment. These are a version of the churidar kameez , characterised by a long, flowing frock-like top, often ornate, and fitted bottoms. Anarkali, largely believed to be a fictional character, was a courtesan in the court of Mughal emperor Akbar. The story has it that he ordered her to be buried alive as she and his son Salim were in love with each other. Their story has inspired various movies. One is Mughal-e-Azam , where Madhubala, in the role of Anarkali, wore these dresses, making them popular.

Noorie suits (made popular in a 1979 film of that name), Hum Aapke Hain Kaun wedding outfits of embroidered satin saris and blouses, the more recent Bunty aur Babli dresses (collared short shirts teamed with Patiala pants and a jhola bag), are other examples of fashion trends that captured the imagination of a movie-loving nation.

Other personal effects that owe their popularity to the movies are Cool necklaces and friendship bands seen in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai , the nerdy glasses seen in the TV show Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin and Jodha Akbar jewellery. And, of course, this column cannot end without mentioning Bollywood-themed weddings and Kareena Kapoor’s Size Zero look.
