A.L. Mudaliar, former Chairman of ICI group, Titan Industries and Bata India passed away this morning in Chennai. He was 87.
A B.Sc. (Hons) and M.A.(Chemistry) graduate from Madras University, he joined Imperial Chemicals Industries (India) in England in 1949 and was posted later to India. In 1974 he became Group Deputy Chairman and from 1976 to 1984 he was Chairman of the ICI group of companies in India.
After his retirement in 1984, Mudaliar served as non–Executive Director on various boards including Hindustan Unilever Ltd; Guestkeen Williams Ltd; The Investment Trust of India; Timex Watches Ltd; Shree Cements; Readers Digest; Bundy India Ltd; HTL, Indian Aluminium Co. Ltd (Aditya Birla Group), Samrat Holdings Ltd (Tata Group).
He also served as Chairman of India Cements Ltd. He was Titan Industries’ Chairman from 1985 to 2001. He was also Chairman of the Corporate Governance Rating Committee of ICRA Ltd.
Mudaliar was also Chairman of IIT, Madras and Member, Syndicate of Anna University. He was President of Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry in India in 1979.
