Murugappa Group company Carborundum Universal Ltd (CUMI) on Saturday opened a Research and Development centre at its industrial ceramics division facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. The facility was inaugurated by MM Murugappan, Chairman, CUMI and Vice-Chairman of Murugappa Group, along with K Srinivasan, Managing Director, CUMI; Jitendra J Jadhav, Director, CSIR-NAL, Bengaluru; and DK Das, Associate Director and Outstanding Scientist, SAC – ISRO.

“ Our vision is to be a leading global player in the field of advanced ceramics by 2020. We believe this new R&D centre is a very important step towards that,” said K Srinivasan.

The RD facility boasts advanced equipment for material characterisation, micro structural analysis, finished component analysis and other critical areas, supplementing the existing RD activity of the unit, according to a company statement.

Certified by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, the unit will be a Centre of Excellence for research in technical ceramics for industrial and advanced applications. The company’s industrial ceramics (IC) division has already partnered with IIT-Madras to develop technology for making nano-ceramic products for structural and functional applications under the NATAG-DST scheme.

It is a joint development effort, and a facility for nano-ceramic characterisation has been established at the newly created NFMTC facility in IIT-Madras.

The IC division has also taken up a joint collaborative project with CSIR-NAL for the technological development of nano-ceramic thin tape for new application segments in clean-energy areas.
