Parenteral drug units in the country are facing the shortage of skilled workforce, which is the greatest handicap faced by the segment of the pharma industry, and the issue should be addressed in earnest, according to Sanjith Singh Lamba, president of the India chapter of the Parenteral Drug Association, a US-based organisation. Parenteral drugs are injected into the system.

He was speaking here to the media on Friday on the occasion of holding a workshop on the parenteral drug units. He said the PDA was holding several such workshops to spread awareness about injection manufacturing process. "A few major parenteral drug manufacturers such as Hospira and Dr. Reddy's Labs have set up units in Visakhapatnam district. But still there is immense hope here for more units, especially with the second pharma city coming up near Nakkapalli in the district," he said.

Lamba said such workshops would be conducted also at Indore, Pune, Ahmedabad and Chandigarh. "These workshops would enable the Indian parenteral industry to measure up to global standards," he said.

He said the Indian chapter of the PDA had been formed three years ago.

Vishal Sharma, of VieNnl, said his company had set up a parenteral drug unit in Karnataka near Bengaluru and "we are also setting up a major parenteral drug testing lab at Hindupur in Anantapur district of AP on the AP-Karnataka border. There are very few parenteral drug testing facilities in the country."
