Tata Motors Ltd has joined the RE100 initiative of The Climate Group, under which companies pledge to get all the energy their businesses need only from renewable sources.
The initiative was launched in New York in 2014, and so far, 53 global big names in business have joined it. These include Coca-Cola, Google, Goldman Sachs, Walmart, Swiss Re, UBS, Microsoft, Adobe, Unilever, Nestle, Nike, Starbucks and Marks & Spencer. Tata Motors is the second Indian company to join RE100, after Infosys. The companies have pledged to go all-green but without a target date.
Arvind Bodhankar, Chief Sustainability Officer, Tata Motors, said today that with energy from the company’s 22 MW of wind power plants and the energy-saving measures at its manufacturing facilities, the company was able to save 44 million units of electricity, leading to avoidance of 72,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
Not including its subsidiaries, Tata Motors currently sources around eight per cent of its electricity from renewables, says a press release from RE100.
Krishnan Pallassana, Executive Director, India at The Climate Group, has said in the release that by joining RE100 Tata Motors was “sending a clear market signal that business wants more renewable energy on the grid.”
