Months after a contract between the Indian Navy and Nova Integrated Systems Ltd, a fully owned subsidiary of Tata Advanced Systems Ltd was signed for the procurement of Surface Surveillance Radars (SSR), Tata Power Strategic Engineering Division has received a contract from the Indian Navy for the supply of Portable Diver Detection Sonar (PDDS) for naval applications.

The PDDS system protects vessels at anchor and ships at berth against underwater threats. It is designed to meet the demands of both portable and ship-borne applications.

Part of the 'Make in India' initiative, this is the second contract under the Defence Ministry's procurement category 'Buy and Make (India)'. The first one was signed on February 17, marking the entry of the private sector in the production of hi-tech sensors for the Indian Navy.

Procurement of the SSR is a part of Indian Navy’s plan for modernisation of its fleet. Nova Integrated Systems is to indigenously manufacture the SSR radars in collaboration with Terma, Denmark. For the second government contract, Tata Power SED has partnered with Israel company DSIT Solutions for the delivery of the PDDS Systems, with a technology transfer arrangement for DSIT's Pointshield PDDS.

The PDDS system supports detection of all types of underwater threats, including divers using re-breathing apparatus, scuba divers, and Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs).

It provides 360 degree coverage and offers high probability of detection for even the weakest of targets.

The PDDS Systems will largely be manufactured at Tata Power SED's Karnataka factories, the company said in a statement.
