Campco (Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative) Ltd is all set to launch a new chocolate product, with coconut sugar as one of its major ingredients.
The product is based on the technology provided by the Kasaragod-headquartered Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI).
Suresh Bhandary, Managing Director of Campco, told BusinessLine that the cooperative’s new product — Campco Kalpa Dark Chocolate — will be released by Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh at the Kisan Mela being organised by CPCRI in Kasaragod on December 10.
CPCRI has developed the technology to extract coconut sugar, which is also known as ‘neera’ sugar. (Neera is a sweet sap tapped from the coconut tree. If not consumed within a couple of hours or stored under controlled temperatures, it will ferment into toddy, with alcohol content).
Low glycemic indexThis coconut-based sugar has low glycemic index, he said, adding that ‘Campco Kalpa Dark Chocolate’ does not have any artificial ingredients.
Campco has got certification from CPCRI in this regard.
Even diabetics and health-conscious people can opt for this chocolate, Bhandary said.
Campco Kalpa Dark Chocolate will be marketed with an MRP of ₹100 for a 40-gm pack. The product will be available in the market from December 21.
Asked about the production target, Bhandary said Campco is planning to produce around three tonnes of this product every month for the time being. Based on the response, the cooperative would increase production, he added.
