A total of 24,500 MW of thermal power projects is expected to come up during the remaining months of 12th Five-Year Plan Period which ends on March 31, 2017, according the latest report of the Central Electricity Authority.
The report gives a status of thermal power projects which are under construction and have been commissioned as on February 3, 2016.
The 12th Plan, which started in April 1, 2012, has already witnessed a capacity addition of 47,839.6 MW of thermal power plants. As on February 3, 2016 the installed power capacity in India stands at 288,004 MW. Of this, 200,740.04 MW is from thermal power projects, 5,780 MW is of nuclear power, 42,663.42 MW is of hydro power and 38,821.51 MW is of renewable energy which includes solar, wind and small hydro power plants.
The Central Electricity Authority’s report also expects some additional thermal power plant capacity from the 55,596.5 MW of projects that are under construction but are not included in the 12th Plan targets.
The report excludes some of the power plants where the fate of the project remains unclear. One such example is Reliance Power’s Chitrangi Power Plant in Madhya Pradesh.
The 3,960-MW power plant has received letter of intent for purchase of power from Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, completed land acquisition and site levelling as well as signing engineering procurement and construction contracts for the project.
However, the Expert Appraisal Committee of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change did not recommend extension of environment clearance for the project.
