Despite strident opposition from the Trinamool Congress and Asom Gana Parishad, the Constitutional Amendment Bill to acquire territories by India and transfer of certain territories to Bangladesh was introduced in the Rajya Sabha here on Wednesday.

According to the Government, the Bill will ensure peace and tranquillity in border areas.

The AGP and Trinamool Congress said the Bill was against the interest of the country. The parties said the Government had not consulted the States around the border before coming up with such a Bill. The Bill will pave the way for giving 17,149 acres to Bangladesh in exchange of 7,110 acres to India.

On the last day of the Winter session, the Government tried to introduce the Bill through a supplementary list. AGP and Trinamool Congress members protested and stormed into the well of the House demanding that the Bill should not be introduced.

Though Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien assured the members that the views of the House would be taken before introducing the Bill, External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid introduced the Bill amid a ruckus. AGP and Trinamool members ran to Khurshid’s seat and tried to snatch the Bill away from him.

The House was adjourned twice over the issue. AGP and Trinamool leaders objected to the Chair’s decision of allowing the introduction of the Bill, with the Bharatiya Janata Party and Samajwadi Party members supporting them.
