With the modern Indian metro-sexual man getting more conscious about style and looks, a few start-ups have seen a business opportunity in making Indian men look good.

Men-focussed start-ups such as Themancompany.com, Clothist (still under stealth mode) , Happilyunmarried (quirky), fetise.com (luxury brands), menzkart.com (undergarments) and corporatecollars.com, all of which have come up in the last few years, are cashing in on the growing styling and grooming needs of Indian men. New Delhi-based ‘The Man Company’, a subscription-based e-commerce service for men’s grooming products, recently got an angel funding from Karan Bajwa, MD of Microsoft India; Amanpreet Bajaj, country manager of Airbnb India; and Manish Vij, founder and CEO of SVG Media.

India lagging

Founded by Bhisam Bhateja and Mohit Saxena, the portal aims to sell male grooming products from deodorants to beard conditioners.

Mohit Saxena, founder of The Man Company, told BusinessLine that there is a dearth of male products in India compared to what is available in the international market.

“…Men don’t put shopping on their high priority list but spend nothing less than ₹1,500-2,000 a month on grooming. Hence, an annual subscription works for them. Customers can also set preferences in their basket for the types of goods that they’re interested in.”

The start-up is also looking to enter apparels soon.

Market size

Saxena, quoting a Euromonitor report, said that the Indian male grooming market is pegged at ₹5,000 crore at present but will reach ₹7,500 crore by 2018.

Another portal for quirky products, Happily Unmarried, also caters to the needs of men, mostly the youth.

The site gives ideas of what to gift their partners, something in which men are known not to have an expertise.

Founded by Rajat Tuli and Rahul Anand, alumni of MICA, the portal is bootstrapped at present and is on the lookout for funds, according to sources.

Similarly, Fetise is India’s first and largest premier online outlet where men can buy luxury products from designer clothes, shoes, personal care, fragrances and accessories, with as high as 80 per cent discount to members.

‘Men ahead’

The company caters to the untapped men’s fashion retail industry by making premium fashion affordable and accessible through e-commerce.

According to industry experts, men do more online shopping compared to females. They shop more on the basis of having taken a prior decision.
