Jaggery powder prices decreased in Erode markets due to lack of demand. Jaggery powder is patronised by villagers instead of white sugar. The jaggery powder season runs from December to April. During the period, farmers will harvest sugarcane, produce jaggery powder by crushing the cane and boiling the sugarcane juice. “Kavindapady and Chitode are the main jaggery powder selling areas in the district. Many farmers from Erode bring their jaggery powder to the two places where it will be sold on tender in the Regulated Market Committee and two private jaggery markets. Buyers from all over the State attend the auction. Last week arrivals were only 1,500 bags (of 50 kg each). Sri Palani Dhandayuthapani temple authorities and Tamil Nadu Government Nutritious roll production wing, the usual participants, did not make any purchase. The traders quoted lower price of ₹1,500 a bag and only 40 per cent stock was sold,” said AM Venkatachalapathy, a farmer.

He said currently, over 5,000 bags of jaggery powder are piled up and farmers will bring their old stock from next week for sale, when price may decrease further.
