British monarch Queen Elizabeth II, who was in Blackburn as part the Maundy Thursday celebrations visited Ewood Park, home of the Blackburn Rovers, and was welcomed by Venkatesh Rao and Balaji Rao, co-owners of the football team. The annual 700-year-old Christian ceremony was held at the town’s cathedral this year, and the Rao brothers met the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh at the stadium before hosting a private luncheon following the formal proceedings.

“To be involved with such a historic event was a privilege for our family and our nation,” Venkatesh Rao said. Pune-based Venky’s has owned the English Football Club, a member of the Football League, since 2010.
