In a major relief to students enrolled in the various courses in government-owned universities, which were not recognised by The National Council for Teacher Education Act, Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar has introduced a Bill to give one-time relief measure of granting retrospective recognition to them.
As per Section 14 of the NCTE Act, every institution which offers teacher education course needs to obtain recognition from the regional committee. Also, every institute which starts any new course or training in teacher education needs to take permission from the regional committee concerned.
But there were various institutes funded by the Central, State government and the Union territory administration, which failed to get recognition and permission from the council.
The Centre has decided to introduce the National Council for Teacher Education (Amendment) Bill, 2017, which will grant retrospective recognition to such institutes till the academic year 2017-18. Also, to grant retrospective permission to new course or training in teacher education offered by the institutions for the academic year 2017-18.
