The Aam Aadmi Party on Friday alleged that political patronage from Congress, BJP’s Narendra Modi and Samajwadi Party was paving the way for re-entry of Ketan Desai into Medical Council of India.
“Ideological differences have been set aside to bring back Desai, despite the ongoing criminal cases pending against him,” senior lawyer and AAP leader Prashant Bhushan, said at a press conference here.
AAP alleged that in “October 2013, the Gujarat University, at the behest of Modi’s Government, nominated Dr Desai as a member of the MCI despite two cases pending against him in the court of law.”
He also flayed Congress leader and Union Health Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, for “unfairly” transferring Health Secretary Keshav Desiraju “for the simple reason that he resisted the Congress and BJP facilitated return of Desai to the helm of MCI.”
“Medical education was reduced to a private business when Desai was at the helm in MCI,” Bhushan added.
AAP also released copies of a letter written to Azad by Mulayam Singh Yadav in December 2013 taking up Desai’s case saying that he was found clean in five out of seven cases against him, and there was a stay in another case.
In 2012, the CBI had filed a chargesheet against Desai for allegedly taking bribe from the management of a Patiala-based private medical college. He was also arrested later. In 2001, the Delhi High Court had removed Desai as MCI president on charges of “misuse of office”.
