Those who have knee ailments could look forward to indigenous knee implants, if the plans of leading knee surgeons are to fructify.

A one-year project for size standardisation and identifying methods for producing high quality affordable implants, as part of the ‘Make in India’ initiative is currently on.

Over the next 12 months, a team of leading knee surgeons aims to screen more than 1.5 lakh patients throughout the country to arrive at the ideal Indian size requirements.

The data would be fed into a special software in collaboration with DRDO and IITs for further research.

This was announced by Mithin Aachi, Senior Orthopaedician & Joint Replacement Surgeon, Apollo Hospitals, at the Arthroplasty Arthroscopy Summit 2016 hosted by Apollo Hospitals here on Sunday.

According to L Prakash, Director & CEO, Institute for Special Orthopaedics, Chennai, the research was already in the process of perfecting the prototype based on the teams’ vast experience.

Most of the knee implants used for surgery in the country are imported and are based on the sizes of American and European patients and hence are causing distress to patients.
