The Debt Recovery Tribunal in Bengaluru is to pronounce today its order on the pleas of an SBI-led consortium of banks for recovery of over Rs 9,000 crore from beleaguered liquor baron, Vijay Mallya, in the Kingfisher Airlines case. The order will bring the curtains down on a nearly three-year legal battle in the tribunal by the consortium, comprising 17 banks, to recover money owed by the defunct airlines.

The 10th edition of the Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF) is all set to begin on Thursday with Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, veteran lyricist Gulzar, American poet Anne Waldman and spiritual writer Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, inaugurating the five-day event. This year JLF has been themed on ‘The Freedom to Dream: India at 70’ and will see over 250 authors, thinkers, politicians and popular culture icons engaging in discussions and sessions at the historic Diggi Palace.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 smartphone will be launched in India as a Flipkart exclusive smartphone, on Thursday. Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 4 will be the first big launch for 2017 from the company in India. Xiaomi crossed $1 billion in revenue in India for 2016, thanks to its budget phones including Redmi Note 3, Redmi 3S and Redmi 3S Prime doing well. Redmi Note 3 was the highest selling online smartphone in India, and Xiaomi is now the number three smartphone vendor in India, according to research firm IDC.

The second ODI of the three-match one-day series will be played in Cuttack on Thursday. India won the first match played in Pune, to take the lead in the series. Another win would see the team take the ODI series as well, putting yet another feather in the cap of new ODI captain Virat Kohli.

The names of people suitable to be considered for membership to the Committee of Administrators will be submitted to the Supreme Court by legal experts Anil B. Divan and Gopal Subramaniam on January 19. A prominent name in the reckoning for a COA position is that of Justice (retired) Mukul Mudgal, who conducted the IPL probe and dealt with issues like spot and match-fixing, betting, conflicts of interest and player-agent matters. The COA’s immediate task will be to oversee the BCCI administration through its CEO Rahul Johri and also, as the Court said, to “ensure that the directions contained in the judgement dated July 18, 2016 (which accepted the reforms in cricket report of the Justice Lodha Committee with modifications) are fulfilled and to adopt all necessary and consequential steps for that purpose.”
