The government should find a long-term solution to ensure power stations operate at optimum levels, a Parliamentary panel has said.
The Standing Committee on Energy tabled a report in the Lok Sabha on Monday, which expressed concerns over the falling plant load factors of stations in the country. Overall plant load factors have fallen to 65.1 per cent in 2014-15 from 78.6 per cent in 2007-08.
“The Committee is deeply concerned with this state of affair as this is not only creates energy deficiency in the country but also result in wastage of generation capacity,” the panel said in its report.
It recommended finding a long-term solution rather than ad-hoc provisions like importing increased amount of coal for a year or two.
The panel also expressed concerns about the fact that 24,000 MW of gas-based power plants are operating at very low plant load factors.
