Commission paid for the beedi contractors in Karnataka and Kasaragod district of Kerala has been increased by ₹2, according to an office-bearer of a contractors’ association.

Addressing presspersons in Mangaluru on Tuesday, KA Khader, vice-president of Karavali districts’ Beedi Contractors’ Association, said that the beedi contractors in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts of Karnataka and Kasaragod of Kerala had submitted memorandums to owners of beedi companies in the region seeking an increase in the commission for 2017-18.

Failed to get any response from the owners for their demands, the contractors, along with beedi workers, were forced to stage an indefinite protest from November 13. Following this, the owners came for a discussion with them on November 20.

It was agreed in the meeting to increase the commission by ₹2 for every 1000 beedis from December. As a result of this, beedi contractors will get ₹18 as commission for every 1,000 beedis sold to the beedi companies from December as against the present commission of ₹16 for every 1,000 beedis sold to them.

He said that nearly 3,500 beedi contractors and around 1,500 sub-contractors from these three districts will get this benefit.
