Over 20 people, including policemen and protesting farmers, were injured on Thursday when their protest against land acquisition for a proposed defence airport turned violent at Nevali village in Thane district. The protesters burnt six police vehicles and blocked the Thane-Badlapur highway for over six hours.
The land at Nevali is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Defence and in pre-Independence times it functioned as an airstrip.
The Nevali airport issue dates back to the Second World War, when the British Government had in acquired 1,600 acres to build an airstrip for use during the war.
However, the land was transferred back to the original land owners after 1947. However, the land’s ownership title remained disputed with the Ministry holding the rights over the land.
Some years back, the ministry again attempted to acquire the land for a defence airport.
Earlier this month, the Indian Navy started building a compound wall around the land, which was objected by the farmers and local land owners.
