Indian Army chief General Bipin Rawat begins a three-day official visit to Dhaka. The visit comes ahead of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's official visit to India in April. General Bipin Rawat will call on president Abdul Hamid, prime minister Sheikh Hasina and other senior military leaders. India is pushing Bangladesh to sign agreements in defence ‘cooperation’.

Today is the last day for dealers to enroll themselves under GST. After a marathon debate that lasted nearly seven hours, the Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed four crucial Bills related to the Goods and Services Tax regime in the country. The Bills — Central GST, Integrated GST, Compensation to States, Union Territory GST — were passed by the Lower House after several amendments moved by the Opposition were negatived. The Bills will now be taken up in the Rajya Sabha. GST is set to be rolled out on July 1.

The window to exchange banned 500 and 1,000 rupee notes closes today. Indian citizens who were abroad during November-December 2016 can exchange the scrapped notes till close of business hours today. NRIs have been allowed time till June 30.

Lawyers in the district courts and the high courts across the country will abstain from work on March 31 to protest against what the Bar Council of India has termed an attempt to take away the autonomy of Bar councils and associations through the Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2017, proposed by the Law Commission. The Bill has been sent to the Union Law Ministry for consideration.

The Supreme Court will hear today a batch of petitions seeking framing of uniform guidelines for designating lawyers as senior by the apex court and the high courts across the country. A petition in the Delhi High Court has challenged the constitutional validity of sections 16 and 23 (5) of the Advocates Act, 1961 which provide the statutory basis for designation of lawyers as senior advocate. Senior advocate Indira Jaising has sought transparency and overhaul of the “opaque system” of designating lawyers as senior advocate and said the apex court should deal with the matter on the “judicial side” and frame uniform guidelines on the issue.
