The Gujarat government on Friday announced a summit exclusively for start-ups as a precursor to the 8th Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit. Aimed at attracting start-ups from across the country and overseas to Gujarat, the summit looks to generate employment through entrepreneurship.

The Vibrant Gujarat Start-up Summit, will be held on October 21 and 22 at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar.

With a dedicated summit for start-ups, the government is aiming at creating a start-up ecosystem that can support the entrepreneurial spirit of the youth, said Arvind Agarwal, Additional Chief Secretary, Industries and Mines Department, Government of Gujarat.

“This summit will be different from other sectoral summits that we have during the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit, which will take place in January next year. This will be a platform for entrepreneurs to engage with successful start-ups, venture funds and incubators, and also for failed start-ups to learn from their mistakes,” Agarwal told BusinessLine , adding that there would be no MoU signing during the start-up summit, as seen in other Vibrant Summits.

Start-up policy The Gujarat government had announced a start-up policy to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship in January 2015.

“So far, 47 projects have been initiated with disbursement of around ₹2.30 crore to 22 nodal institutes that act as incubators. These projects collectively involve over 100 start-ups,” Agarwal said.

He said that to further push employment and encourage innovation, the State government will launch Gujarat Start-up Mission, which will be directly chaired by the Chief Minister.

“Manufacturing is a strong aspect of Gujarat. Let there be innovation or ideas from any part of the country, but they can come to Gujarat to make a business out of if. This summit provides them an opportunity to connect and work in that direction,” said Sunil Parekh, a corporate strategist and start-up consultant.

The start-up summit is expected to have over 3,500 delegates attending over 20 sessions to be addressed by 50 national and international speakers. The roadshows for the summit will be held in Surat, Vadodara, Mehsana, Rajkot, Anand and JamnagarMumbai, Hyderabad, New Delhi and Bengaluru.
